The Gato Audio PM Series arrives with modest fanfare, yet lofty ambitions. As the top of the line model in the all-new Gato Audio Performance Monitor range, the floorstanding PM-6 is, naturally, the object of great expectations.

Drawing heavily on the extensive original research and experimentation in materials technologies, driver design and crossover configuration that underpin the elevated performance of the original, groundbreaking Gato Audio FM loudspeakers, the floorstanding PM-6 offers Gato Audio’s renowned musical involvement and emotional immersion at a more accessible price point (relatively speaking, of course). The Gato Audio PM Series drivers have been carefully selected from the very best Danish transducer designs available, prior to extensive modification and customization to meet our exacting demands in terms of measured performance, power handling, subjective sound quality as well as long-term thermal and mechanical stability.

Although superficially similar to the mid/bass driver that the PM-6 shares with the stand-mount PM-2 (170 mm paper cone, low-loss suspension, powerful motor assembly with shorting rings), the second PM-6 woofer is, beneath the surface, a substantially different driver, optimised for added deep bass extension and the increased power handling capability required for true low frequency reproduction.

The ability of a drive unit to react instantaneously to any change in the signal is a crucial factor in achieving uncompromising musical integrity. Unfortunately, conventional large, brute force woofer designs are slow to respond due to their increased mass. Inertia makes it harder to start and stop, blurring the leading edge and decay of bass transients that are crucial to the perceived realism of all styles of music.

With an additional low frequency transducer at its disposal, the PM-6 takes the already impressive performance of its compact, stand-mount sibling to the next level with enhanced deep bass that plumbs the depths with authority, impact and force.

Extended overlap between the cone drivers ensures a seamless, smooth transition at the lower crossover point and delivers potent deep bass with speed and precision that elude heavier, less agile woofers. Call it a 2 ½-way system, if you feel the need to stick a label on it.

The dedicated, optimised deep bass driver offers superb, tight bass performance, assisting and relieving the bass/mid unit by moving substantial air volumes. Unwanted interaction between the cone drivers is effectively eliminated by isolating them in separate sub-enclosures to ensure optimum working conditions for each driver individually as well as perfect musical timing for all the drivers in unison.

The Gato Audio PM-6 couples effectively to the floor via machined spikes mounted in the metal base. Coasters are included for protection of the floor. Subtle adjustments for ideal toe-in and tilt relative to the listening position will ensure consistent coverage of a wide listening area.

Gato Audio PM-6 is available in handsome Glossy Black or Glossy White finish. Front grilles attach magnetically. Dual sets of gold-plated copper binding posts facilitate bi-wiring or bi-amping.
