FM-2 - State of the Art 2-way Loudspeaker
Form follows function here where beautifully machined and polished metal surfaces meet with organic materials. Gato Audio FM-2 speakers truly are state-of-the-art in terms of quality impression, design and sonic performance. They also excel under lab testing conditions with high sensitivity, wide frequency range, linear frequency response and ultra-low distortion. They are available in black, white, walnut and maple - all in high gloss.
The extruded aluminum rear profile on the Gato Audio FM-2 dampens resonances and reduces the recoil force’s influence on the dynamics. This is achieved by increasing the loudspeaker’s mass and also due to the occurring diode effect when materials of varying stiffness and density are linked together. The aluminum profile also ensures a beautiful design correlation with Gato Audio's amplifier and CD player.
The treble range is reproduced by a so-called ring radiator unit with two concentric membrane waves of saturated textiles. The waves’ large curvature radius and effective ventilation of the area behind the membrane ensures both a low well-dampened self-resonance and minimal dynamic compression even at very high sound levels. In the upper octaves, Gato Audio has achieved a remarkable relation between linear frequency response and efficient sound spread by the means of a custom designed aluminum front
The speaker units’ sensitive membranes are protected by discreet fabric frames that are attached easily and elegantly by tiny neodymium magnets. Note the special glue-reinforced cross-cuts on the bass / midrange unit’s hyperbolic membrane surface. This is where the foundation for the exceptionally low distortion and absence of resonances is created. The result is a high degree of transparency even while playing highly complex music.
Large contact surfaces and a wide copper cross-section minimize electrical resistance and facilitate efficient transfer of huge electrical transients. Gato Audio's beautiful bi-wiring terminals makes connectivity easy exactly according to the user's preferences with a choice between banana plugs, bare wires, pins or spades. And naturally, Gato Audio also produces pre-assembled cables in state-of-the-art quality that match the company’s electronics and speakers.
A beautiful industrial design is characterized not just by its clever solutions, but also by the choice of beautiful materials and meticulous fastidiousness to even tiny details such as veneering and lacquering as well as the shape of the decorative trim rings machined from aluminum. We have carefully designed the rings, so they fit snugly to the bass / midrange unit edge suspension without affecting the loudspeaker frequency response.
The fabric covers are held in their right position by the use of small, powerful neodymium magnets that completely obviate the need for any unseemly notches or pins usually necessary on speakers for serious home use. The covers are obliquely bevelled on both sides; on the surface facing the membrane and also on the outside so that any distortion caused by acoustic diffraction is reduced.
The crossover in Gato Audio FM-2 is bejeweled with top-grade components mounted on a PCB of matchless quality: We use large, powerful inductor coils with low resistance values, high-capacity power resistors, and fine capacitors (Clarity Caps) with an extra-high voltage limit and low ESR value. The components are carefully selected for their audio qualities, tight tolerances and solid long-term stability
